Our Background

The Story Behind J-RENO

Our Founder

Justice for Refugees Network Organization was founded by Victor Batali Sillas, a lawyer and environmental rights defender, who was forced to flee for safety as a result of threats to his life because of his stand to defend the oppressed and voiceless who were suffering human rights abuses in South Sudan.

Mr. Victor is also known for his advocacy for environmental and climate justice.

In furtherance of this noble passion, though challenging work and together with fellow refugees he found himself within the camps in Uganda after several months of temporary emergency relocation, henceforth, birth of J-RENO with the following vision and objectives:

Our Vision

An empowered refugee community living in dignity and shared prosperity.

Our Objectives

It is our objective to advocate and defend the human rights of the underprivileged members of the society, especially the refugees, asylum seekers, migrants and human rights defenders. We hope to:

  • Establish legal aid clinics that will also act as arbitration and mediation centers for settlement of disputes within and beyond the refugee communities
  • Conduct trainings and awareness programs
  • Mobilize legal resources to enable effective representation and access to justice

Our Achievements

We have already successfully:

  • Mediated high profile disputes amongst South Sudanese entrepreneurs
  • Arbitrated eviction cases of urban refugees
  • Conducted workshops on environmental and climate change
  • Provided psychosocial support counseling in Uganda

Holistic Approach

We understand well that legal justice cannot serve our people in isolation without working for economic and social justice, environmental and climate change issues for a holistic approach to the empowerment of the less privileged for them to live a life of dignity and shared prosperity.

Call for Partnership

We need your collaboration and partnership. An important program of J-RENO is to advocate for the protection and support for human rights defenders who have fled their home countries and or are living in "safe places", yet without support and psychological counseling for them and their families. There has to be a way to care for our own, through the network of human rights defenders and supporters.

Therefore, due to the constant threats exerted on human rights defenders and civil society activists, J-RENO emerges to consolidate suppressed voices outside the country with enthusiasm for defending rights of everyone in the society.

We look forward to partnering and working together with you.
